Celebrating Women for International Women’s Day 2019 – Meet Iolanda

February 27, 2019 in Singapore

Meet Iolanda, babes volunteer and entrepreneur. Celebrating Women for International Women’s Day 2019

This International Women’s Day (8 March) the global campaign is #BalanceforBetter and I was inspired by this to feature some of my friends and fellow entrepreneurs to celebrate our successes and accomplishments till date. Nowadays 'finding balance' seems to be on top of everybody's mind, but how to accomplish it is a different question. To me personally the balance changes every day and I think that's good. Some days the balance tips over to your work and that's where the majority of your time and energy goes to, other days it's your family or yourself or your friends. To me that makes up the #balanceforbetter - choosing on a daily basis what balance works for me.

I asked my friends what #balanceforbetter means to them, as well as share some insight into their entrepreneurial journey. Honestly, I feel privileged to know so many accomplished women, call them my friends and be inspired by them or ask them for advice when I'm stuck. Please meet:

I hope you're just as inspired by them as I am and let's celebrate and collaborate together.

Can you give me a brief intro to yourself and what you do?

My name is Iolanda Meehan and I am a mother of 2 beautiful children, I love the art, earth and good food, I am a babes volunteer and I am an entrepreneur with a big-sounding title:-). I am the managing partner for the boutique consultancy called veldhoen + company which provides consultancy to companies undergoing transformation to embrace new ways of working.

This International Women’s Day the theme is #balanceforbetter. Better the balance, better the world. What does this mean to you?

I think the theme is extremely relevant as more of us strive for ‘balance’ in our busy lives. To me ‘balance’ means constant adjustment, dynamic transformation before you experience ‘balance’. I feel we all need to balance our focus on ourselves and our lives with giving more to the communities we are part of: like supporting babes and other organisations that try to restore some of the balance.
I am fortunate that in the way I work I get to practice what I preach to my customers: so I am flexible to plan my days to balance family time with my work schedule and I also aspire to balance more between city-living and time in nature, balance between on and off screen time, balance between opportunities created for men and for women, balance between taking but also giving back to the communities we live in, etc.

You have been an entrepreneur for a while now. Can you share a failure that in hindsight has been a big win / your biggest win till date?

Oh yes, I remember it vividly, it was painful. I made a mistake in one of my first quotation to a customer. When I realised it, it was too late, so I had two choices: to admit my mistake and risk losing the big bulk of the project or to ignore it. I chose the former (as the only real option for me to be honest) and after a period of insecurity, the customer reconfirmed our agreement and we have now built a longer term business relationship built on trust and honesty. Facing up to my mistake turned out to be the biggest win.

I love to read and am always looking for recommendations to keep learning. Which book should everybody read / has inspired you the most?

I just finished reading ‘Dare to lead” by Brene Brown and I loved it and felt so inspired to action and insight by it. Anybody who wants to get to the heart of what it means to be a leader and everybody who is ready to take a look at themselves, will enjoy reading this book. I also love and re-read few times ‘The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy’ by Douglas Adams.
